Making my own toothpaste is a very rewarding chore. It's easy, takes only a few minutes, and very inexpensive. It's so much better for sensitive mouths too! Less chemicals = less irritation.
All you need is coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oil of choice- I use peppermint.
Mix one part baking soda with one part coconut oil. Half-cups are great to start, or if you're unsure, quarter cups or even tablespoons if you just want to try it out. For half-cup measurements I add approximately 12 drops of peppermint essential oil. Keep in mind peppermint EO can be irritating in too large a quantity!
Mix it all up and put it in a glass container- Voila!
I've been using this recipe on and off for about a year. My bf, who is prone to canker sores, says that our homemade toothpaste and mouthwash (next post!) help soothe his canker sores, and he also feels that he gets more canker sores when he's using commercial toothpastes- because of all the chemical irritants.
Enjoy!
